A Simple MK7 GTI Mods Cheat Sheet
The MK7 GTI has earned its reputation as a hot hatch icon. It’s fun, practical, and packed with potential for performance enhancements. However, with so many upgrade options available, it can be tough to know where to begin. This guide will walk you through some of the most popular and effective mods for your MK7 GTI, whether you're after a slight performance boost or transforming it into a track-ready beast.
Foundational MK7 GTI Mods
How do you know which mods to make first and which GTI performance parts take precedence over others? We’ve created a blog post that discusses this very topic, entitled “From Novice to Expert: Building Your VW or Audi's Performance Step-by-Step”.
Consider the following a simplified “cheat sheet”, providing you with a quick guide to which mods to make first as well as links to blog posts we’ve written for each topic for additional reading.
ECU Tuning
Tuning your MK7 GTI’s Engine Control Unit (ECU) is one of the most impactful mods you can make. Why? If your engine is the heart of your GTI, then the ECU is the brain, telling the other systems what to do and in which quantities.
By tuning (also called “remapping”) the ECU, you can not only reap immediate benefits, like an immediate horsepower and torque boost power set the stage for other changes, like using different types of fuel.

Air Intake Kits
One of the easiest and best ways to make your car more fun to drive is by adding a cold air intake.
Cold air intakes are known to make cars on which they’re installed sound more aggressive, and powerful. But intakes can add actual performance gains, too!
We wrote a whole blog on this very topic, and while it is Audi-focused, it applies to the MK7 GTI, too!
Exhaust Tuning
Upgrading your VW GTI MK7 often results in not only a throatier and more athletic exhaust note but also a potential horsepower boost.
MK7 GTI owners, in particular, have been known to add 5-20+ horsepower by upgrading their exhaust system, especially if you upgrade the downpipe, much of which usually comes from reducing backpressure, and thus letting your engine “breathe” better.
Intercooler Kits
For turbocharged engines like the one found in the MK7 VW GTI, an intercooler is a great modification to make.
All internal combustion engines have a radiator to help cool the engine itself. By contrast, intercoolers lower the temperature of compressed air specifically for the intake system before combustion happens. The result? Denser, cooler air creates a more efficient combustion reaction and, in turn, boosts performance.

Next-Level MK7 GTI Performance Upgrades
Once you’ve completed the above mods, you might want to start thinking about what the next level is! Our resource “The Ultimate Build Guide For Your 2.0T GTI and Golf R - From Mild to Wild” can help.
But in the meantime, here are two next-level mods to think about making, provided here for easy reference.
Fuel System Upgrades
While upgrading your fuel system might not seem like the most glamorous mod to make, it’s essential for certain levels of modification. On the MK7 GTI, MK7 Golf R, or other MQB Platforms, you’ll need to upgrade fueling if you’re going to run Ethanol blends or use our TrueFlex flex fuel upgrades. An upgraded High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) is required.
Turbocharger Upgrades Kits
If you’ve already completed an ECU tune and upgraded your fuel injectors and fuel pump, then upgrading your stock turbocharger with an aftermarket turbo could be a great way to add even more power.
To understand why that is, we invite you to read our blog post “Turbocharging 101: Learn About Basic Turbocharger Operation”.
For the MK7 GTI, Golf R, S3, or Audi A3 specifically- the Garrett GT2260S with matching IE software is an excellent upgrade.
Suspension Upgrades
We can’t forget about cornering and handling mods. After all, if you wanted a car that would just go fast in a straight line, you probably wouldn’t be a VW driver.
Simply put, upgrading the suspension of your GTI goes hand and hand with increasing its power, ensuring that you enjoy the ride whether on the highway, twisties, or track.
