Most intercoolers let charge air take the easy path straight through the middle of the core. The iE Flow Distribution System uses precisely shaped fins cast into the inlet plenum to spread air evenly across the entire core. The whole core works, so intake air temperatures drop further than with any competing unit, and you keep the power.

Heat soak is what happens when the heat you make outruns the cooling you have. You feel it as fading power after a long pull or a few back-to-back runs. A much bigger core put fully to work by FDS keeps intake temps consistently lower than stock and competing intercoolers, pull after pull.

A bigger core usually means more pressure drop. FDS flips that. At Stage 1 power, pressure drop falls from about 1 PSI to 0.3 PSI, so the turbo works less to make the same boost.

PRECISION ENGINEERED

iE engineers used Computational Fluid Dynamics to shape the end tanks and the FDS fins for minimum pressure drop and maximum flow. The end tanks are cast, then machined, then TIG welded to a dense bar and plate core measuring 21.25 x 17.5 x 2.5 inches. Every intercooler is pressure tested on our in-house station before it ships.

The inlet and outlet are fully machined so your hoses seal and stay put under boost. The intercooler end tanks connect to the factory hoses, and the inlet tank has a 1/8 NPT bung cast in, ready for water-methanol injection.

FAQs

When do I need an upgraded intercooler?

Every B9 benefits, because the factory intercooler is small. The gains grow with Stage 1 software and up, and a bigger intercooler is necessary with a hybrid turbo.

What is included?

The FDS intercooler, install brackets, and all the bolts, washers and hose clamps needed for installation, plus an install guide.

Do I need to modify anything to install it?

No. It is a direct replacement for the listed applications. No trimming, cutting or modification.

How much power will I gain?

It depends on your tune, turbo and boost level. The biggest effect is consistency: lower intake temps and less knock mean the car keeps making power instead of fading as it heat soaks.

Can I run water-methanol injection?

Yes. The inlet end tank has a 1/8 NPT bung cast in for a water-meth nozzle.

Raw or black?

Both are the same intercooler. Pick the finish you want with the color buttons above.

Love it!!

Just installed on my A5 B9. Noticeable difference between pulls, the stock intercooler was limiting and you definitely feel heat soak on a stage 2 tune…. Noticeable difference between anymore. Very easy install with only slight modification (shorter bracket spacer) to allow clearance for the hood latch unit. Highly recommend.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Sure it’s very pricey, but if you’ve ever tried doing a pull on a hot day, wait till you do one in the blistering heat with this bad mamma jamma. Did a launch, and my IAT was getting lower as I was getting faster. 100°F to 85°F throughout the whole 0-120mph pull. Wonderful product, thanks IE!!!!

FOR B9.5 WITH ACTIVE GRILLE SHUTTERS:

wasn’t aware my b9.5 had active grill shutters. Had to remove them completely which triggers a U0284 CEL only during startups and goes away. If yours has grill shutters, you may remove them; however, this will decrease aerodynamics/fuel economy—5-10%—at highway speeds and cause the engine to take longer to reach operating temps, as the shutters remain closed to allow the coolant to warm up. Not a major problem.
